Vein Problems
Vein problems are common in the U.S. and Europe. By age 50, nearly
40% of ladies and 20% of men have significant varicose veins or other
vein disorders. Leg pain, swelling, and ulcers caused by vein insufficiency
are common reasons for time loss from work and other productive activities.
Vein disorders are manifest in a variety of ways:
- Varicose veins are large, ropy, unsightly and uncomfortable veins
visible in the skin.
- Spider veins are small, skin blemishes blue to red in color,
often branching.
- Dermatitis is the brown or red skin color change usually near
the ankle.
- Ulceration from vein insufficiency develops near the ankle, most often
on the inside of the ankle, but sometimes on the outside area.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are ropy appearing blue vessels
under the skin, usually ¼ inch
or larger in diameter. They are most often branches from the saphenous
trunk veins, and have enlarged due to the excess pressure in the
saphenous system. Varicose veins are unsightly and often painful.
A clotted varicose vein causes the classic phlebitis, hot and red
and painful skin at the site of the clot. Beside the visible symptoms,
physical symptoms are tiredness, restless legs at night, heaviness
in the leg, pain, aching, itching, throbbing & swelling, burning
or a cramping sensation.
Spider Veins
Spider veins, medically known as telangiectases
are dilated capillary veins less than 2mm. in diameter. They are
small blue to red appearing blood vessels that lie close to the surface
of the skin and occur either in lines or web-like patterns. They
are usually visible on the legs. " While
they can ache, burn or itch now and then, but they are usually not
symptomatic. Spider veins are not harmful and are simply unsightly.
The cause is largely genetic but can also be due to pregnancy, childbirth,
use of birth-control pills, estrogen-replacement therapy, prolonged
standing,
physical trauma, lifestyle changes, aging and use of corticosteroids.
Vein disorders are usually a sign of an underlying
physiologic abnormality. The most common problem is malfunction of
the greater saphenous vein. One-way bicuspid valves within this vein
do not close to hold the column of blood, creating excess pressure
within this trunk vein and all branches.
Treatment of vein problems is directed toward the cause, symptoms, and cosmetic
appearance. The underlying cause must be corrected initially. Often the symptoms
and the appearance improve after this treatment alone. Dr. Bradbury uses all of the
modern treatment options available today, including laser ablation of the saphenous veins. He uses injection treatments and laser treatments
for spider veins. He also performs the mini phlebectomy operation to remove
unsightly larger varicose veins. Treatment is individualized for each patient,
to provide the best possible result.
